Urban Edible Gardens

Citrus Trees for the Everyday Gardener

When many of us think of citrus, we think of massive orange groves, warm weather and abundant sunshine.  While it is a beautiful mental picture, get those ideas out of your head because growing citrus trees is accessible to the everyday gardener!

Tomatoes: The Jewel of the Garden

The pride of any urban vegetable gardener is the glorious homegrown tomato. If you love tomatoes, you know there is no comparison between a store-bought and vine-ripened tomato. Growing tomatoes is fun and easy when you lay a little groundwork.

Growing Basil

Basil is one of those distinctive herbs. You know exactly what you are smelling the moment you catch a whiff. Whenever my husband walks by it, he tells me it smells like pizza! Most people associate basil with Italian cooking, however it's origins are most likely from India. Give basil a warm, sunny location with well drained soil and you'll be rolling in the basil all summer long.

Carrots: Easy to Grow, Easy to Eat

Carrots are one of those wonderfully carefree vegetables. Very few pests and diseases bother them. Just a little prep work and you can be harvesting fresh carrots in no time. In fact, my carrots seem to thrive on neglect!

Thinning Fruit Trees for Better Production

You haven't taste fruit until it has been picked ripe straight of the tree. Commercial fruit is typically picked while the fruit is still green and then allowed to ripen in transit to the grocery store. Unripe fruit does not bruise as easily during transport and ripe fruit would spoil before it reaches the produce section at the supermarket. So how do we get the big, beautiful fruits we see in the store, but picked when perfectly ripe from our own fruit trees? By thinning, of course!
